Launch of the second Brussels Be Fair Awards
The Fair Trade Platform of the Brussels-Capital Region has launched the second iteration of its Brussels Be Fair Awards. In addition to public services, the organisers have added a second award category, namely educational institutions in the Brussels-Capital Region.
The Brussels Be Fair Awards are part of the Brussels Government’s overall commitment to transform the Brussels-Capital Region (BCR) into a fair-trade region. The awards, which are organised by the Fair Trade Platform of the Brussels-Capital Region, reward the efforts of any public entity – and now also educational institutions – in the BCR that promote fair and sustainable trade and consumption in the Region.
Applications must be submitted before 19 May 2023. The awards will be presented to the winners in October 2023.
The Brussels-Capital Region: a fair-trade region in 2024
The Fair Trade Platform of the Brussels-Capital Region launched its campaign titled ‘Turn the Brussels-Capital Region into a fair-trade region‘ on 12 May 2021 in the Brussels Parliament. The aim is to obtain the ‘Fair-trade region’ label for Brussels by 2024.
The Fair Trade Platform of the BCR comprises the Communes du commerce équitable / FairTradeGemeenten campaign, Enabel (the Belgian Development Agency), the Belgian Fair Trade Federation (BFTF), Brussels International, hub.brussels, several municipal administrations, and members of civil society.
It wants the Region to be at the forefront of sustainable development, solidarity, and fair trade, and has the support of Rudi Vervoort, the Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region, Pascal Smet, the State Secretary responsible for International Relations and Foreign Trade, and Meryame Kitir, the Federal Minister for Development Cooperation.
Three awards in two categories
Three awards will be presented at the end of the competition, in each category of eligible candidates.
The Fair Buyer award will be presented to the public service and educational institution that made available the largest variety and/or quantity of fair-trade products in 2022 to employees, users and/or students.
The Fair Speaker award will reward the actions and impact of a public service and educational institution in terms of raising awareness and promoting fair trade in 2022, to employees, users, students, and other stakeholders.
The Sustainable Actor award, finally, will be presented to the public service and educational institution that established and/or joined partnerships and synergies, with initiatives and organisations that promote and raise awareness of fair, sustainable and local consumption, in 2022.
