Europe co-finances the creation of an intergenerational, equal and socially blended co-housing project

The Brussels-based CALICO co-housing project, which was developed with the support of the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the intermediary of its “Urban Innovative Actions” programme, was inaugurated on 4 September 2021.

Bruxelles Logement oversaw the CALICO project (CAre and LIving in Community), which was developed in collaboration with various Brussels partners and which received European funding to the tune of 5 million euros.

The project is one of 22 laureates that were selected in October 2018 from a total of 184 projects that were submitted in the framework of the ERDF “ Urban Innovative Actions ”programme. This initiative of the European Union enables European urban areas to develop and implement innovative and new solutions to the challenges they encounter.

A co-housing project based on diversity and solidarity

CALICO, which is situated in Forest/Vorst, has 34 new-style housing units, divided into three clusters.

The first cluster, which was developed by a not-for-profit association called Pass-ages, has a birth home and an end-of-life home, and explores new ways of living together founded on solidarity. Young and older people live together here and commit to helping and supporting one another.

The second housing cluster, which is overseen by a not-for-profit association called “Angela D.”, is a gender-sensitive housing development, which was designed to address the gender-based problems that women face.

Finally, the third cluster, which focuses on creating affordable housing for rent and purchase, was developed by the CLTB. This not-for-profit foundation oversaw the entire project and owns the land on which it was built.

The CALICO project was supported and overseen by perspective.brussels, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, EVA Bxl, the Logement pour Tous social housing agency and the municipality and public social welfare centre of Forest/Vorst. It is located at rue du Delta, 59-65 in 1190 Forest. The building was inaugurated on 4 September 2021 and the European part of the project ends on 31 October 2021.
