European Green Capital 2015: Brussels among the finalists
On 14 June, in Nantes, the European Environment Commissioner, Janez Potočnik, announced that Bristol was chosen by the panel responsible for selecting the European Green Capital 2015.
First of all, Brussels would like to congratulate Bristol! A finalist for the third time, the city of Bristol will certainly be a good ambassador for urban environmental policies.
Even though we didn’t make the final selection, Brussels is proud to have been chosen as a finalist and ranked second by European experts during the first assessment. The results achieved over the past 10 years by Brussels are impressive: 21 % reduction in CO2 emissions and in energy consumption per inhabitant, treatment of all waste water, reduction in waste production and water consumption, increase in the use of public transport and bicycles, etc.
In addition, Brussels centered its application on an original approach to establish innovative environmental policies: actions involving significant input from citizens, associations and companies, followed by the dissemination of good practices and the creation of an innovative statutory framework.
This progress and our place as a finalist must also push us to do more and better in areas where we still can still improve, such as mobility and air quality.
