Montreal metro hosts artwork from Brussels

Since the 18th of May, travellers passing through Montreal’s Place-d’Armes metro station have been able to admire the work “Midnight Sun” by Franco-Belgian artist Adrien Lucca. This artistic presence on (or rather under) Quebec soil is the fruit of a cultural exchange between Bruxelles Mobilité and the Société de Transport de Montréal (STM).

“Midnight Sun” by the artist Adrien Lucca donated by the Brussels-Capital Region in joint anniversary celebrations for the metro in Brussels (40 years) and in Montreal (50 years).

“Midnight Sun” was officially unveiled in a ceremony attended by a number of dignitaries. Alongside the Mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, and the Minister of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region responsible for Mobility and Public Works, Pascal Smet, the chairman of STM’s board of directors, Philippe Schnobb, and the CEO of the Société des transports intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB), Brieuc de Meeûs, were also present.

“This gift from Bruxelles Mobilité celebrates 40 years of the Brussels metro and 50 years of the Montreal metro, as well as the 375th anniversary of the foundation of our beautiful city. This cultural exchange strengthens the ties that link Brussels and Montreal, and Belgium and Québec”, said Mayor Denis Coderre.

“The artwork unveiled today represents many things. First of all, the Sun that forms a bridge between our two cities, but also the warmth of the friendship that binds the Brussels-Capital Region and the City of Montreal. Thanks to the combined talents of Adrien Lucca and artisan glass makers, the strength of this friendship can now be admired in one of Montreal’s most important metro stations. This is a special link between the Brussels-Capital Region and Quebec Government that has been maintained since we signed the 2002 cooperation agreement”, Mr. Smet added.

The Montreal metro will also donate a work of art to the Brussels metro. Signed by the Montreal artist Patrick Bernatchez, it will be installed in autumn 2017 in Trône station on the STIB network.
