Regiostars 2014: a special nomination for the STIB !

06-2014-Varia-1.1 The “Ticket to Kyoto” project, organised by the Brussels Regional Transport Agency (STIB), the public transport operator in Brussels, was selected as one of the 19 finalists in the Regiostars awards contest of the European Commission.   The RegioStars awards aim to reward good practices in regional development and to highlight original and innovative initiatives. Although the “Ticket to Kyoto” project did not finish in the top four it was the only project to receive a special mention from the jury for its high quality and its inspirational character in the “City Star: investment projects for sustainable urban public transport” category. Five large urban public transport companies joined forces with “Ticket to Kyoto” to find efficient and practical solutions to reduce their environmental impact on their respective cities. They include the transport companies of Bielefeld, Paris, Manchester, Rotterdam and Brussels. The STIB developed a new cogeneration system, combining the local production of electricity and very high yield heat as well as an energy recovery system for the brakes of the subway trains. “Ticket to Kyoto” was co-financed by the European Union in the framework of the transnational Interreg IVB North West Europe programme, of which the Brussels-Capital Region is a member.
